Getting Spanked...

When my brother told me about his dream of being a sports writer, I thought he was crazy! I didn't think he'd have the focus, determination and discipline to see it through. I thought this blog would be a good test, to see if he had the passion to follow his dream NO MATTER WHAT and prove me wrong!

Well I was pleasantly surprised for the first couple of weeks. Not only did he make his required Monday/Wednesday/Friday deadlines, but his posts showed interesting spirited opinions about the Yankees and his life. And the readers kept coming back, agree or disagree, the lively debate at Yankee Spank proves he is on to something.

When I first explained the rules of the Spank and the reason for the deadline, I was quite clear. If a blog is going to survive, you have to take care of it, you have to feed it, if you don't then readers stop checking in and it withers and dies. If for any reason he doesn't get a post in, then he will suffer the consequences with a Spank, a story or picture about his childhood from me. There are two reasons for this. Number one, the motivation factor, a kick in the butt just to make sure the story gets filed. Number two, to save the blog, loyal readers need something to keep them coming back. The Spank is something for the readers and fans when Chris isn't able to keep up his end of the bargain.

Well Thursday, I got the blog entry for Friday early with a note saying this is for tomorrow. A blog has to be fresh and current, there can't be 'banking' of entries. A technicality? Yes, but I thought the fans would enjoy the Spank and it is a way that Chris can see I mean business. Well after that picture, I got an email from our father asking to "take it easy on Chris" and to "not give him another Spank on Monday because he won't have access to a computer." I'm sure that tactic works at ESPN, but it doesn't work here at Yankee Spank. Chris had all weekend to write and he could have called me with the entry, faxed it, text message, etc. I think this is a pretty easy hurdle to get across and a valuable lesson if he plans to make a go of it in the big leagues later on.

So in answer to the request, I will let the fans decide, not a note from DADDY! Chime in with a comment and let them know how you feel about it? Should he get another Spank if he doesn't meet today's deadline???
